Inspecting the Cellar: Three Passages and the Clock Door

The first cellar visit is a tool-selection puzzle: each passage takes a different kit, and the three clocks combine at the last door. If you are looking at a bottle shelf instead, you are in a different task; the night-duty and dinner bottle arrangements use other clues.

Match a tool kit to each passage

For the left passage choose a spade, magnet, and matches. Pull the key from the mouse hole with the magnet, dig up the box with the spade, and use the key to take the torch. Put it in the wall holder and light it. Record the passage clock as 8:00.

For the middle passage take a corkscrew, empty bottle, and matches. Open the barrel with the corkscrew, fill the bottle with oil, then ignite the spill. When the blast opens the next wall, pour oil into the rock opening and use another match. Continue to the clock and record 10:00.

The middle kit is the easiest place to import the wrong solution from an older walkthrough: the current instructions and the inspected official scene show a corkscrew, bottle, and matches, not a hammer.

For the right passage select a hook, hanging weight, and sledgehammer. Hang the weight from the hooked ring to raise the gate, then break the weakened column and move through to the third clock. Record 5:00 from the statue you passed before entering a passage.

Open the final door

Place the matching timepiece on each statue and set them left to right to 5:00, 8:00, and 10:00. Go through the opened door, take the book, and return it to Aldous; that handoff completes Inspecting the Cellar.

The night-duty bottle shelf is a separate room with portrait symbols, while the later dinner cellar has restored portraits and a different arrangement. Do not carry the 5:00, 8:00, 10:00 statue solution over to either bottle shelf.
